Religious architecture is a dominant expression of Mid-Century Modernism in St Louis and throughout much of
the Heartland. The embrace of modernism allowed for spiritual exploration, a renewed sense of the confluence
of building and environment, and nourished experimentation in the interplay of form, materials & systems. In
context — following World War II — these structures represent a period of national expansion, space discovery,
cheap energy and a palette of new building materials and systems that brought Eisenhower’s famed “militaryindustrial
complex” to the doorstep of historic city centers and nascent suburbs alike. In its zeal to break with
tradition, modernist aims led to some unlikely marriages of material and form, many of these now seen as
Modernism’s Achilles’ heel and the origin of specific pathologies of deterioration.
For preservation professionals, Modernist religious structures provide a potent laboratory illuminating issues
relating to authenticity, maintenance, resiliency, code compliance, material science and sustainability. They
challenge us to reflect on, expand and even reinterpret precepts of preservation including the time-honored
Secretary of Interior’s Standards and Venice Charter, now itself a 50 year-old landmark. It is incumbent on us to
determine both why modern building systems fail as well as the contribution each system brings to the whole in
order to specify appropriate treatments. Cast-in-place concrete, exposed & embedded structural metals, roofing
membranes, glazing and HVAC systems are often targets for wholesale replacement due to biases included in
current computer modeling and building codes. As such, they are flash points for those seeking a more refined
approach that maintains technological authenticity while keeping the building functional, durable, comfortable,
efficient and healthy. It is critical that the often-brilliant innovations of Modernism not be discarded simply
because they are misunderstood, untested or incorporate components that have failed but are readily renewed.
Tools for testing and analysis do not discriminate based on architectural style or age. Processes that have
proven successful in isolating critical measures of performance — or lack thereof — at traditional historic sites are
readily adaptable to the special conditions and materials represented in Modernist buildings. Moreover, they are
the underpinning of holistic preservation decision-making. Evaluations need not be costly, and have proven
invaluable in pinpointing issues to be addressed: what to keep, what to change. This paper will illustrate case
studies of St Louis Mid-Century Modern religious structures, demonstrating concepts discussed throughout this
abstract. Focus will be on critical field evaluation — especially of concrete, metals, roofing membranes & glazing
— coupled with methods of data collection and analysis that are basic to sensitively preserving our recent past.
Lessons offered through diagnosing religious structures have far-reaching applicability to the vast landscape of
Modernist buildings, both prodigious and mundane.
