FIRE ISLAND PINES -
Four homes were destroyed in a massive fire in Fire Island Pines.
Firefighters rushed over on boats around 1 a.m. to 154 Ocean Walk, which is where the fire started. Fire officials say winds quickly blew flames to surrounding homes, damaging at least two others.
The homes on Fire Island Pines are all connected by narrow boardwalks, with very limited access to vehicles. Firefighters had to use boardwalk pumpers to get close enough to the house to help fight the fire, which officials say is likely one of the reasons it took four hours to put it out.
Officials credit the quick response from main-land firefighters from keeping the blaze from spreading further, and potentially destroying 15-20 more homes.
Two firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries. One firefighter was taken to Southside Hospital for an elevated heart rate, but is listed in stable condition.
Joseph Geiman, first assistant chief of the Fire Island Pines Fire Department, said the house of origin was not occupied at the time of the fire because the residents were out for the evening.
The homes to the left and the right of that house were destroyed. The residents of those homes reported the fire.
Flames also damaged two other homes, with propane tank explosions fueling the flames.
Gelman said the fire spread partially because of the wind.
“We had a northwest wind, it was moving at about 30 miles per hour last night, so it quickly blew the smoke and flames into the west side house and to the north,” he said.
The fire was under control just before 5 a.m.
Sixteen fire departments and 120 firefighters battled the blaze.
Gelman said there were three firefighter injuries. Two refused medical attention and one was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for evaluation of elevated blood pressure.
No injuries were reported.
