minutes later…OH Wait here it comes! WOW It continued to fly beyond 700-800m. GOOD it flew back, unharmed, no one hurt. FULL STORY BELOW.
Wow… talk about a scare. No one wants to be the guy with an out of control drone on the news. No one wants to crash into someone or do damage. Certainly the Bebop is safer than a larger heavier design. But the possibility of un-reliable control is something to consider.
I had already flown my Bebop 10 times total, some indoor some outside. I also have previous experience with my AR Drone 2 GPS/Logger and my nVidia Shield controller (Android). I have over 4000 electric RC Para-motor flights.
I setup at Fiesta Island a large empty sand box, in the middle of Mission Bay, San Diego, CA. I was approximately a mile north of the electric RC field. I’ve flown RC Paragliders here often and my AR Drone a few times. I powered on the Bebop at least two full minutes before connection. I was controlling with my nVidia Shield which I always thought provided a good range and control with the AR Drone 2. I set outdoor, no hull, tilt angle to 20 degrees? alt to 12m, WiFi in auto. Showed a white sat icon in the corner. I launched to hover. I hovered briefly. I quickly flew a distance away and I climbed a bit. At approximately 85m, 45 seconds I attempted to hover and turn back toward me. It turned back around but then seemed to be drifting backward slowly, not hovering. This is when it got confusing, because I intended to stop to a hover but it continued drifting back, north west and right into the sun. I had a frozen video display. After it drifted past the sun I could see it was still pointing toward me, and I commanded forward. It continued to drift I tried left/right and turn all seemed to have no affect. I tried a long maybe 5-10 second forward hoping for obvious signs of control. Maybe the commands I tried were happening delayed? While trying to verify I had some control apparently I had turned it pointing away and then off it went in the wrong direction. I stopped applying any input and started running in that direction, it was driving now away further north/west toward the road and parked cars. While I ran I pressed the Return Home on the setup screen. HA HA, that will work best when you have WiFi link available. At 1:24 it is just continuing to head away slightly up wind and out over the bay. My 10m altitude limit cleared the fences people and cars but as it was cruising across the park I could not make it out due to the distant terrain and shadows. As I crossed the road, A man asked if that was my Bebop. I explained that it had flown by out of control. He saw it flyby he too and we were both now trying to see where did it go. We had a short discussion about WiFi control being less reliable than RC.
I returned to looking at the interface on my Shield it still indicated disconnected. In conversation I was writing this thing off, gone. Why didn’t it stop to a hover, and I had realized that the return home would only work while I had control. I started to walk back, hoping my phone would ring, my video display was still frozen. Maybe 8-9 minutes after the launch, and after the short conversation, as I was walking back, I noticed the attempting to re-connect, then I heard the stranger I left behind shout, “It’s coming back” I turned to look, I could not see it yet and my video display was still frozen.
But then I saw it, coming back over the parked cars maybe 20′ above. As it got closer I was able to regain control, 26% battery left. I attempted to hover, it still was drifting (slowly) so from a low altitude and still slowly drifting I pressed the Land command.
Unfortunately the video stopped at 4:27, I also have a quick clip when I manually turned the video back on just before I landed.
1616:10 – 1626:42 Good thing it had a full charge!
I should have hit the emergency kill, When the Return Home button didn’t work I should have thought to shut down the WiFi and maybe kill the app. I have calibrated for outdoor flight previously and flew fine but my recent 2 flights were indoors and uneventful so I did not re-calibrate or adjust level before this flight.
So. . . the Bad: it can get away from you. The good:if it doesn’t crash while out of control, it may come back.
Glad to get it back! And already tonight – it’s back at Best Buy. I’ve never been happy with the regular Wifi range. I am still considering a Skycontroller bundle.
I hate to admit I was the guy with the out-of-control drone. But for safety’s sake, I thought I should share my experience so others might learn from my near-mishap and consider their options. Had this happened further south at the flying club I may have ended up crashing into SeaWorld parking or the roads around there.
Fly Safe. . .
